.
I bought my first Labrador when I first started working, a yellow bitch called Sheba. She came from a split litter and in those days before DNA testing, the litter could not be KC registered but that didn’t bother me as she was going to be my companion. My dream was always to have my own car and a yellow Labrador sat next to me; both came true. Chris and I met at Clarks, I worked in the office him in the warehouse. One day my parents brought Sheba to meet me from work, as Sheba set eyes on me my dad let her off the lead, she came bounding towards me ran straight past me to Chris, so you can safely say a Labrador brought us together. Sheba adored him, he spent many years working Sheba and she loved it.
Chris and I were married in 1982 blessed with 3 children Kelly, Jason and Victoria. When Sheba got older, I bought Chris his first pedigree Labrador Muffin, who Chris trained to the gun right from the start. We also showed him at local companion shows and open shows with some success. Mohamed’s Thunder Punch At Lembas born May 5th 1989 he was a Ch. Follytower Merrybrook Black Stormer G Grandson and SH.CH. Charway Blackthorns of Follytower Grandson. We were very proud of him and had great pleasure seeing photos of his relations in breed history books. We decided we would go and have a look at the real world of dog showing, our first visit to Cruft’s came in 1989 where we joined the Labrador Retriever club. We got bitten by the show bug, little did we know how it would change our lives.
The Lembas Affix was granted in 1995.
We have been asked many times how we came by the name Lembas, and for all you Lord Of The Rings fans, you would know of the word Lembas. Lembas was the name of the Elven bread given to the ring bearers on their journey to destroy the ring, as it gives strength and purpose to your quest.
We were advised when we purchased one of our foundation bitches that we would need strength and purpose and very broad shoulders if we were to succeed in the world of showing dogs. There have been many times when we have needed a large chunk of Lembas Bread to keep us going.
Muffin made such an impact on us and our children with his wonderful nature so we decided we wanted to extend our Labrador family and delve into showing and breeding our own dogs to show. After spending many hours looking at pedigrees and pictures of so many different types of Labradors, we both decided on the type we were looking for and always came back to Mrs Broadleys Sandylands kennel with our favourite being CH. Sandylands My Guy.
We purchased two foundation bitches, one black and one yellow. After contacting Mr Tony Pascoe, of the well known Trewinnard Kennel, he recommended two breeders who had just had puppies; Fiona and Derrick Braddon (Trendlewood) and Julie and Gary Allan (Jugaren).
Jugaren Moonlight Melody At Lembas ( Meg ) 17/9/1994
Trendlewood Midnight Silk At Lembas 5/5/1994
Lottie
We were delighted to discover that Fiona and Derrick had mated their lovely black bitch Trendlewood Reine to CH. Sandylands My Guy and we could have second pick of the bitches, we chose Trendlewood Midnight Silk At Lembas (Lottie Mills), she was such a character.
This started a lasting friendship with Fiona and Derrick and we will always be grateful for the advice that has always been readily forthcoming.
Julie and Gary offered us second pick of their yellow litter from Jugaren Cleopatra mated to Trewinnard Quick Time a son of Sandylands Special Vintage she was Jugaren Moonlight Melody At Lembas Megan came home with us and proved to be very important in our future success.
Our first litter born 1996 Lembas Misty Maiden( Tilly )was sired by Watermere Bobby Dazzler out of Trendlewood Midnight Silk At Lembas
Tilly had some success in the ring. Tilly never produced a litter for us but was always a good puppy sitter Tilly’s sister Lembas Guinevere ( Molly ) went to live with Jayne and John Gregory, Penedlake Labradors in Cornwall, this started a very special friendship
Jaz, Muffin, Meg, Tilly and Lottie
Then along came Lembas Mysterious Girl ( Jaz ) born 1/11/96 sired by Trendlewood Take That out of Jugaren Moonlight Melody At Lembas (Meg) Jaz had a litter producing the wonderful Lembas To The Moon And Back. My Mum and Dad fell in love with Jaz and she went to live with them. When we lost my Dad she was my Mums constant companion.
Lembas Button Moon ( Winnie )
Winnie
Winnie born 4/13/1997 sire SH.CH.RochebyWhisky Mac out of Jugaren Moonlight Melody At Lembas Megs second litter. Winnie delighted us by being our first home breed puppy to qualify for Crufts taking a 3rd in Minor Puppy Bitch at the Three Counties Show under Mr David Coode in 1998. In those days it was very difficult to qualify for Crufts unlike now. Winnie was mated to Lembas To The Moon And Back (Bodger) in 1999 and gave us our first SH.CH. Lembas Moonlight Serenade
Lembas Midnight At The Oasis ( Tarka )
Tarka was born on 30/3/98, sire Rocheby Navy Blue out of Lottie Trendlewood Midnight Silk At Lembas
She was very successful in the show ring. She won numerous best puppies, and a reserve best puppy in show at Weston Super Mare canine society. She was our first dog to get a card at Crufts, a second in special puppy in 1999
Tarka then in 2002 had a 2nd at Crufts in Post Graduate. Tarka gained her stud book number in 2003.
Tarka was mated to CH. Sandylands My Guy when he was at the grand old age of 14. She gave us 4 puppies. We kept a dog puppy Lembas Guys Last Fling and our dear friend Jayne Gregory had a bitch Lembas Guys Girl at Penadlake who was a 50th birthday present from her husband John
They both went on to win 2 C.C.s but unfortunately neither got their third
Tarka is also the dam of Lembas Angel Eyes who was an only puppy and born on Chris’s 50th birthday

Bodger Winning Best Puppy In Show
Bodger was born 17/11/1998 sired by SH.CH. Sandylands Gadabout out of Lembas Mysterious Girl, from a early age you could see he was special, his first show at 6 months was Devon County Open Show, the judge was Harry Jordan, Bodger won his class then Best Puppy In Breed, Gundog Puppy Group, then he took Best Puppy in Show, that was the start of a fantastic year, out of 12 championship shows entered he won 7 firsts 2 seconds
At the National Gundog Championship show Judge Margaret Brown he won the R.C.C. at 9 months old, we were then know as Mr & Mrs To The Moon And Back, it was Bodger that got us noticed, I can remember at Bath Championship show Richard Wiles following us to the car and saying he was the best puppy he had ever seen, we were so proud of him, in 2000 Richard was judging the dogs at the Labrador Retriever Club Championship show, we were really looking forward to showing Bodger under him, 2 days before the show I decided to bath him, what a mistake, he ended up having a cold tail and I could not show him, you live and learn, I never bath my dogs that close to a show now. As Bodger matured, he was for a lot of Judges too strong, but it was as a stud dog that he really made his mark, he is the sire of 3 U.K. Champions our SH.CH. Lembas Moonlight Serenade J.W. SH.CH. Berolee Moons Magic Star J.W. Both of these bitches winning Best In Show at the Labrador Retriever Club Championship Show
SH.CH. LUX.NED.CH. Carpenny Made The Trip, Hampsbeck Willies Choice Sh.CM. had 2 C.C.s 1 R.C.C. Utter Nonsense of Tintagel Winds J.W. 1 C.C. 3 R.C.C.
He has sired Numerous R.C.C. winners in the U.K. also Champions for the U.S.A. Italy, Belgium, Japan, Switzerland .
He was U.K. 2003 Top Sire our dogs competition, on one occasion at Paignton championship show all 5 puppies in the cards were sired by him.
He was very much a Mummies boy and only on a few occasions’ did Chris handle him, he had the most wonderful temperament a big softie he loved his cuddles and was a good dog with the youngsters especially baby pups, when we had people come to look at puppies they would always say can we have one like him, everyone one who knew Bodger loved him.
It was a very sad day when we lost him.

Penny was born on 18/11/99 out of Lembas Button Moon By Lembas To The Moon And Back
It was at this time we became good friends with Rose and Terry Rodd, we promised Rose a bitch from our next litter, and that was Penny, as she looked very promising Rose asked if we would like to put her in joint names, we agreed.
At L.K.A. her first show in junior judge Dianna Becket awarded her, her first C.C. her second came in 2002 at East Anglia L.R.C. Judge Pat Gill, Penny winning the C.C. and Best in Show and Lembas Lets Get Serious (Charlie) winning Best Puppy in Show, it was a very special day for all.
On the 8th of June at the Labrador Retriever Club Championship show under Janice Prichard Penny was awarded her third C.C. and with Co. judge Penny Carpanini Best In Show, Fiona Braddon winning Best Puppy in Show with Trendlewood Play With Fire also sired by Lembas To The Moon And Back

Three days later at the Three Counties show saw judge M Floyd Charlie winning his first C.C. and Penny winning the bitch C.C. and Best Of Breed, “doing the double for the Lembas kennel”

With Penny’s success and that of our other dogs we were awarded Top Breeders Pedigree chum/ Our Dogs competition 2002.
In 2003 we mated her to SH.CH. Lembas Lets Get Serious producing lembas Wish Upon A Star and for Rose and Terry Tuppence a Bag At Hodexal , Penny was a very good Mum, but unfortunately she was never to have another litter, in 2005 we discovered a mammary tumour, she was operated on and made a full recovery, we only showed her occasionally after that and her last show was at Crufts 2007 where she got reserve in Veteran.
Penny was the sweetest of dogs very much loved by us all especially Rose and Terry.

Lembas Angel Eyes
Angel was born on 5/8/02 sired by our SH.CH. Lembas Lets Get Serious J.W. (Charlie) out of Lembas Midnight At The Oasis (Tarka)
We had lots of fun with her in the ring Angel won numerous best puppies, at the Labrador Retriever Club Of Scotland she was Best Minor Puppy in Show then She won Best Puppy In Show at Minehead and District open Show.
In 2005 she gained her stud book number also in Scotland, Angel is without doubt the naughtiest dog we have ever had, if we asked anyone to handle her for us they would run a mile, I remember when Jayne Gregory handled her for us, when asked by the judge to do a triangle Angel would not take the corner so Angel followed by Jayne went straight out the ring, we were all in fits of laughter, she was then retired from the ring.
Lembas Mr Bo jangles (B0) and Lembas Georgia On My Mind (Gina)
Bo and Gina where born on the 25/10/2002 we kept Bo and his sister out of this litter, never really showing either of them, but could never let them go, Bo was a very useful stud dog for us producing lovely puppies, with the most fantastic temperament, and passing on his good looks

Lembas Top Ranking and Lembas Misty Morning stayed with us
Star was a very promising puppy, we were looking forward to showing her but at 6 months but she really did not look that good, in fact if the right home had come along we might have let her go, but luckily it did not, when Star was 10 months old things seemed to click back in to place and she started to look very promising again, at 11 ½ months we took her to a show in Exeter, all our friends thought it was another dog, she won Best Puppy and 2nd in the Gundog Puppy Group, a week later was the Labrador Retriever Club of Wales championship show, we were delighted with Star winning the puppy class and then winning Best Puppy in Show, judges Peter and Jane Palmer.
